I recently came across a travel tipsheet in the san Jose Mercury news that talked about must-sees in Tokyo and Kyoto. So I think at least we must see some of them.
Tokyo: Sensoji temple and Asakura Shrine, the Imperial Palace and gardens
Kyoto: Kinkakuji (Beautiful Golden Temple) and Kiyomizu-dera Temple
they also have a website www.jnto.go.jp for the Japan National Tourist Organization
